This week on MD for Moms, I'll be interviewing  Neurologist Dr. David Younger about disorders triggered by infection and autoimmunity that can impact the children's nervous systems. Examples include Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS). Everyone has likely heard of Lyme Disease, but did you know that it can affect the brain? This is one of several causes of PANS. Symptoms can be vague, so it is often misdiagnosed. Have you ever heard of PANDAS? It isn't referring to the cute bears in the zoo! PANDAS is a syndrome resulting from strep throat. Children wake up one morning with new tics, or psychiatric symptoms like Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Behavior often changes drastically and children can have significant issues in school and at home. Scary! Dr. Younger will share how these infections impact the body, common symptoms and treatment options. Dr. Younger will share a balanced review and will explain some of the medical controversies surrounding these illnesses.

Learn more about my guest, Dr. David Younger: Dr. Younger completed a three-year medicine residency before completing his training in neurology, followed by three years of fellowship before joining Columbia’s faculty as Assistant Professor. He was recruited to three Manhattan hospitals where he served as Chief of Neuromuscular Diseases for over almost two decades, already an established editor and author of several textbooks and over 200 research articles. Almost 35 years after graduating from Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons, Dr. Younger, Clinical Associate Professor of Neurology and Adjunct Associate Professor of Public Health, completed a Master of Science degree in epidemiology, and a Master of Public Health degree at NYU, writing his thesis on PANDAS.  His research recognized the beneficial effect of immune modulatory therapy in PANDAS, employing intravenous immune globulin. It was not until he returned to postgraduate training in public health that he discovered that he had an interest and talent in epidemiology research. MD for Moms Radio | MDOC: Dr. Valerie Gafori | V-literate | March 15th 2017

This week on MD for Moms, I'll be interviewing  OB/GYN Dr. Valerie Gafori about all things pregnancy and vagina related. Women tend to be shy about discussing what occurs between our legs. Why are we so often uncomfortable discussing symptoms that so many of us share? Times may be slowly changing, (ahem, anyone see those billboards for undies if you pee when you cough or laugh?), yet we still remain pretty prudish. This is often to our detriment because the more we know of vaginal health, the calmer we can be about normal things and the faster we can get help for the abnormal. Similarly, during pregnancy women often don't ask the question 'why'. Why do I need this test? Why another ultrasound or blood draw? Many keep quiet because of a misguided thought they should know and will look silly asking. Enter Dr. Gafori, who will explain all different symptoms women commonly and not-so-commonly experience, the reasons for tests in pregnancy, and so much more.

Learn more about my guest, Dr. Valerie Gafori Dr. Gafori received a bachelor’s degree in Physics from MIT in 1993, a master’s degree in Biology from Stanford University in California in 1995, and her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey: NJ Medical School in 1999. She went on to pursue her post-graduate training at George Washington University in Washington DC graduating in 2003. She enjoyed private practice at Northern Virginia Gynecologists for one year specializing in general gynecology and obstetrics, before relocating to San Diego and accepting a position at Infertility, Gynecology and Obstetrics Medical Group. Dr. Gafori is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. Her practice at IGO encompasses the full breadth of women’s health, with interest in both general obstetrics including high risk care, and gynecology, particularly laparoscopic surgery. Dr. Gafori is fluent in Spanish and Farsi and is a fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. MD for Moms Radio | MDOC: Dr. Dana Corriel | You Need An Internist | March 8th, 2017

This week on MD for Moms, I'll be interviewing  internist Dr. Dana Corriel on health and why women need internists. I have a confession: I only see my internist when I am sick. I can't remember the last time I went for an annual physical. Are you similarly lax in seeing your primary care doctor when you feel well?  The doctor in me knows that yes, I should see my internist regularly and so should you.  My guest this week will explain the benefits to having a personal physician and seeing him or her at least yearly for well visits. Dr. Corriel will discuss Dr. Google and the pros/cons of using it as a source of medical information. We will explore signs and symptoms of common illness and so much more.

Dana Corriel, MD is a board-certified internist working as a primary care doctor in Pearl River, NY, as well as the Director of Quality at Highland Medical, PC. She spent nearly five years as an assistant professor at the World Trade Center Medical Monitoring and Treatment Program at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, NY, treating first responders from 9/11.
