I was honored to have the opportunity to speak at a conference entitled ‘Contemporary Discussions in Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders,’ sponsored by the Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey.
My talk, entitled Mom’s The Word, Help Mom Go From “OH” to “OK” focused on the dangers of untreated maternal mental illness in pregnancy and the potential treatment options available.
The room was packed with highly interested providers eager to learn more in order to further help moms (and dads). New Jersey has been at the forefront of screening for postpartum depression, and clearly is leading the way with interest and involvement in terms of treatment.
There were many excellent speakers at the conference, including my friend and co-PSI board member, Danny Singley, one of the few psychologists who focuses on dad’s mental health. Dr. Singley spoke about postpartum depression for fathers, which is a fascinating topic that rarely gets the attention it deserves.
I encourage everyone to check out his informative website and to consider the fact that up to half of all men whose wives suffer from postpartum depression also have postpartum depression. Dr. Singley will be joining me on my radio show, MD for Moms in July – it will be a great show that you won’t want to miss!
