MD For Moms Radio, Every Wednesday 1pm (ET) on The BBM Global Network, TuneIn and iHeartRadio or as a podcast on iTunes.
This week on MD for Moms, I interview Dr. Carina Hopin, a woman who wears many hats, including that of physician, artist, mother and blogger. She believes passionately in the value and benefit of tapping into one’s creativity in order to face challenges and overcome difficult experiences. Her third child was born at 26 weeks and spent six months in the NICU; during this time, Dr. Hopin re-connected with her artistic side and derived great strength through painting. She shares how art helped her get through the NICU period and has since helped her grow as a person and as a physician as well as lead an overall happier life.
We discuss how engaging in artistic endeavors and finding your own creative outlet can minimize stress if your baby is in the NICU, if you are struggling with new parenthood or anytime in life, and how letting yourself play around with art can be freeing and fun anytime. Life can be more joyous when we relax and let ourselves color outside the lines and accept the inevitable inaccurate brush strokes – art helps us to learn how to use these errors and incorporate them into what ultimately becomes a final product to be proud of.
